I presented three sketch options to the author and art director: two single page cover sketches, and a spread page idea that left potential to be used if the novel were to be published physically.
The final sketch approved had important plot related elements that I included after reading through the novel. I wanted the readers to have fun easter eggs to look back on after they finish the story and look at the cover again.
After the sketch was chosen and approved, I blocked in the values so the team can understand what kind of atmosphere and lighting I'd be going for. Afterwards, I started choosing a color scheme I wanted to the novel. I ended up going for a pink-teal palette that I thought would look great with the main characters' design colors and I thought it would be eye catching to potential readers with its vibrancy. The final version went through lighting edits by the art director.
